Camel Fat and Beeswax Ointment

Discover the traditional process of making “Zikao” herbal ointment from camel hump fat, raw beeswax, and comfrey. The hair-covered skin is first separated from the thick fat, which is cut into small cubes and slowly rendered with water and heat. Once the clear oil separates from the remaining tissue, it is filtered and combined with beeswax and selected herbs. The herbs are fried in stages until their natural extracts are released and the oil develops a deep red color. After the dried herbs are removed, the mixture is filtered again and left to cool until it solidifies into a smooth ointment. This traditional balm is applied externally as part of local skin-care practices and is commonly associated with soothing minor discomfort caused by insect bites.
