In a major legal development, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has acquitted Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in the 24-year-old murder case of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati, while upholding the life imprisonment of three other convicts—Kuldeep Singh, Nirmal Singh, and Krishan Lal. While Ram Rahim’s legal team, led by Jitendra Khurana, hailed the verdict as a victory for justice, the journalist’s son, Anshul Chhatrapati, who has spearheaded this legal battle for over two decades, termed the acquittal a "major setback" and vowed to challenge the decision in the Supreme Court. The case dates back to 2002 when Ram Chander Chhatrapati was fatally shot outside his home in Sirsa after exposing sexual exploitation at the Dera headquarters in his newspaper 'Poora Sach.' Despite this acquittal, the Dera chief remains behind bars at Sunaria Jail in Rohtak, as he continues to serve a 20-year sentence for the rape of two female disciples.
