If rivers don’t use filters… why do our aquariums need them? In this episode of The Physics of Nature, we explore what aquarium filtration actually does — not which filter to buy, but why filtration exists in the first place. In nature, biological processes are distributed across vast surfaces: sediments, leaf litter, submerged wood, and microbial biofilms. In aquariums, we compress those natural systems into glass boxes. Filtration doesn’t “clean” water in the way most people think, it concentrates biology into an engineered space. We’ll look at nitrification, biofilms, surface area, oxygen, mechanical and chemical filtration, and how modern aquarium systems differ from natural blackwater environments. Referencing limnology and aquatic microbiology research, this episode challenges the idea that filters create stability and instead suggests they compensate for simplified ecosystems.
