Description

Please share with your friends. Montacute House is one of England's finest surviving Elizabethan mansions, located in the village of Montacute House in Somerset. Built around 1598–1601 for Sir Edward Phelips, it is considered a classic "prodigy house"—a grand country residence designed to display wealth, status, and sophistication. What makes it special? The Architecture Constructed from warm golden Ham stone, quarried locally from nearby Ham Hill. Features huge expanses of glass, which were a luxury in the Elizabethan period. Combines late medieval English traditions with Renaissance influences, creating a remarkably elegant and symmetrical design. The Long Gallery Montacute is famous for its spectacular Long Gallery, one of the longest surviving galleries of its kind in England. The gallery houses portraits on loan from the National Portrait Gallery and has appeared in numerous films and television productions. The Gardens Formal lawns, clipped yews, orchards, and flower borders surround the house. The gardens change dramatically with the seasons and are a major attraction in their own right. Historical Connections Sir Edward Phelips was a powerful lawyer and politician who later became Speaker of the House of Commons. He played a role in the proceedings against the conspirators involved in the Gunpowder Plot. His ambition and wealth funded the construction of Montacute House. The Phelips family owned the estate for over three centuries before financial difficulties led to its eventual transfer. In 1931 the house was rescued from possible demolition and later passed to the National Trust, which still cares for it today. On Screen Montacute House has been used as a filming location for productions including the TV series Wolf Hall, helping introduce the house to a wider audience. Thanks for watching.
