WHAT IS A FILM PRODUCER?
Most people have heard the term "producer" in relation to film-- we all see the credits role by with producers, co-producers, executive producers, associate producers, and on and on. But far fewer people actually know what a producer does, and even fewer know what the difference between all the types are. In this video we aim to clear up a producer's role, and the many titles a producer can have.
TYPES OF PRODUCERS IN FILM
The term "producer" covers a wide range of responsibilities. The Executive Producer often secures financing or brings together key creative and business relationships, overseeing the project from a high level, while the Producer is the central figure who manages the film from development to release, balancing creative ambitions with financial realities.
The Co-Producer and Associate Producer assist with specific aspects of production, anything from handling logistics to coordinating departments. The Line Producer or Production Manager handles the day-to-day operations, ensuring the shoot stays on schedule and within budget.
WHAT DOES A MOVIE PRODUCER ACTUALLY DO?
During development, the producer identifies promising material (an original idea, a novel, or a script) and works to secure rights. They guide script revisions, helping shape the story into something financially and logistically viable. The producer assembles the creative team: hiring the director, writers, and sometimes key cast members. In pre-production, they move into planning mode: creating budgets, scheduling the shoot, and ensuring all contracts and permits are in place.
ROLE OF A PRODUCER IN FILM SHOOTING AND BEYOND
Once filming begins, the producer ensures that each department has what it needs to deliver. With the help of line producers and UPMs, they troubleshoot daily problems, oversee expenditures, and mediate between creative and financial pressures.
In post-production, they supervise editing, sound, music, and visual effects, keeping the project on track for completion. The producer also leads the film’s marketing and distribution strategy, arranging festival submissions, negotiating with distributors, and overseeing promotional campaigns.
In essence, the producer is the through-line of a film’s life cycle, often even more than a director. Without them, a movie doesn't happen.
