The word “Rast” is Persian and means “straight.” In this context, it refers to the first degree among the seven known degrees. The name of this degree is Rast. This maqam is very wide and has been used frequently by reciters, callers to prayer, performers of anashid, and in supplications. It became widely used because it is beloved by people. In the past, it was used so much that some felt it became overused. However, today it is still performed in different ways in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the Maghreb, and Iraq. Maqam Rast includes quarter tones. Its third degree is lowered by a quarter tone, and its seventh degree is also lowered by a quarter tone when descending. Because of this, it carries a distinct Arab tonal characteristic. Many adhans in the past were performed on this maqam. Among the reciters known for using Rast are the imams of the Haram, including Sheikh Ali Jaber, Sheikh Al-Sudais, Sheikh Al-Shuraim, and Sheikh Al-Hudhaifi. Sheikh Ali Jaber was especially known for his mastery of this maqam. Maqam Rast is not limited to one country; it is an original Arab maqam that is loved by many. It is common in formal recitation gatherings to begin with Bayati and later move into Rast, often returning to Bayati at the end. This became a tradition over time. Maqam Rast is known for clarity, seriousness, and firmness. It is often preferred in verses that contain commands and rulings. At the same time, there is no strict rule. A reciter may use one maqam or move between maqamat. The principle mentioned is that the maqam should serve the meaning, not that the meaning should be shaped to serve the maqam.
