The Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg Funicular Railway is a modern urban transport link in Luxembourg City connecting the historic Pfaffenthal district in the Alzette valley with the Kirchberg plateau above. Opened in 2017, the funicular forms part of Luxembourg’s integrated public transport network and provides a fast, scenic route between the lower city and the European quarter. At the base of the line is Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg railway station, situated in the valley beneath the city’s dramatic cliffs and fortifications. This station lies on the main national rail corridor, making it convenient for visitors arriving by train from across the country or from neighbouring destinations. From here, the funicular climbs approximately 40 metres in elevation over a short but steep gradient, reaching the Kirchberg plateau in just a couple of minutes. The upper station provides direct access to the Kirchberg district, an area known for its contemporary architecture, European institutions and cultural attractions. Within walking distance are major landmarks including the European Court of Justice, the European Investment Bank, and the Philharmonie Luxembourg. Art and history enthusiasts can also explore the Mudam Luxembourg, located nearby in a striking building designed by architect I. M. Pei. The funicular system itself operates with two panoramic carriages that run on parallel tracks, counterbalancing each other as they move.
