Description

We visited the first-ever Northeast India Organic Week in Shillong - a four-day international gathering that brought together farmers, organic practitioners, global buyers, policymakers and youth delegates from across the world. Organised by the Meghalaya Agriculture Department in partnership with APEDA, the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, and IFOAM - Organics Asia, the initiative spotlighted the growing organic movement in the Northeast and the efforts being made to connect the region’s high-value produce with national and global markets. At the venue, we explored Meghalaya’s organic landscape up close - from ginger, turmeric, fresh fruits and niche spices to tasting some of the region’s finest pineapples and mandarins. Equally compelling were the conversations - listening to dignitaries, farmers and experts speak about sustainable farming, market access, export opportunities and the role of youth in shaping the future of organic agriculture. This visit was to understand how APEDA and regional stakeholders are working together to strengthen organic value chains and create new possibilities for farmers across the Northeast.
