Description
Marshal Georgy Zhukov was the Soviet Union’s most famous commander—hero of Moscow, Stalingrad, and Berlin. But victory didn’t protect him from Stalin’s paranoia.
After leading the 1945 Victory Parade, Zhukov was too popular for Stalin’s liking. Fearing a potential rival, Stalin sidelined him to remote commands in Odessa and the Urals.
Only after Stalin’s death was Zhukov brought back. Nikita Khrushchev rehabilitated him, naming him Deputy Defence Minister—and Zhukov even helped remove secret police chief Lavrentiy Beria in 1953.
By 1955, he was Defence Minister and one of the USSR’s most powerful men. But history repeated itself. After crushing the Hungarian Revolution in 1956, Zhukov’s influence grew too large for Khrushchev’s comfort. In 1957, he was accused of building his own “cult of personality” and forced into retirement.
Zhukov spent the rest of his life writing heavily edited memoirs, returning briefly to salute the 1965 Victory Parade. He died in 1974—still the most celebrated commander the USSR ever produced.
