This one floored me. The Pointer Sisters performing Yes We Can Can in 1974 — with Gaylord Birch on drums — is some of the deepest, most musical funk I’ve ever seen on a live stage. Gaylord Birch is locked so deep into the pocket it’s unsettling. Nate Smith vibes. Steve Jordan energy. More than a little Bernard Purdie in the DNA — but still completely his own voice. And then… mid-solo… He stops playing, grabs a mic, and vocalises the drum solo. I’ve genuinely never seen anything like it. This is what happens when a drummer isn’t just keeping time — but shaping the entire performance as a musician. And we can’t ignore the Pointer Sisters themselves: Immaculate harmony.
