Instead of turning around, the Lieutenant powers the truck up a narrow, loosely packed ramp beside the dam and pushes on to the end of the gorge — all the way to the waterfall. That’s where they plan to spend the night: a local dinner, the sound of falling water, and a desert sky glowing under a super full moon that peaked just two days earlier. Morning begins with the traditional canyon hike before the journey continues across the vast white of the Chott el Djerid. The crossing is effortless; a wide, straight highway cuts cleanly through the salt sea from end to end. Their destination for the day is Douz. From there, the pistes lead straight into the world’s greatest sandbox — the dunes of the Sahara.
