DAILY CATHOLIC MASS 2/17/26 | The Crown of Life: Persevering in Temptation and the Paschal Mystery

We are reminded that God, the Father of lights, never tempts us but instead provides every "good and perfect gift" from above. We are encouraged to move beyond the "leaven of the Pharisees" and to recognize the superabundance of God’s grace—the same grace that fed the thousands and is made present to us in every Eucharist. The Scriptures highlight the origin of sin and the bread of true life: -The First Reading (James 1:12-18): St. James proclaims that those who endure temptation are blessed, for they shall receive the crown of life promised to those who love God. He clarifies that God is not the author of temptation; rather, it arises from one's own desire. -The Responsorial Psalm (Ps 94): A song of trust in divine discipline: "Blessed the man you instruct, O Lord". -The Holy Gospel (Mark 8:14-21): The disciples realize they have forgotten to bring bread, having only one loaf in the boat. Jesus warns them to watch out for the "leaven of the Pharisees" and the leaven of Herod. When they worry about their lack of food, Jesus reminds them of the baskets of fragments left over after the miraculous feedings, asking them pointedly: "Do you still not understand?". May the saving grace we receive at this heavenly table sanctify us and bind the whole family of believers together in Christ.
