He explained that unusual glacier movement—whether shrinking rapidly or advancing unexpectedly—can trigger devastating consequences for nearby communities and downstream regions. According to him, these changes often lead to the formation of unstable glacial lakes, which can burst and cause catastrophic floods, washing away villages, roads, and critical infrastructure. Dr. Haq said that the recent changes in glacier behavior are not only increasing the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) but could also lead to severe water shortages in the future as glacier reserves continue to decline. Referring to past incidents, he noted that the advance of the Shisper Glacier blocked the natural flow of water, resulting in the formation of a glacial lake. The lake later burst twice, causing significant damage to downstream areas and sections of the Karakoram Highway. The SUPARCO official identified climate change, global warming, air pollution, and widespread deforestation as the primary drivers of accelerated glacier melting.
