NSW Police are appealing for help to track down a rapper wanted over a gangland execution in Surry Hills last year.
The victim was 31-year-old Nedaal Acherkouk who was ambushed in a brazen daylight attack at a BP service station at cleveland street on November 22. he had known ties to the Comanchero MC and had just finished dinner at a nearby Turkish restaurant when two masked gunmen pounced.
Disturbing CCTV footage released by police captures the terrifying final moments of his life. The victim is seen sprinting across the forecourt, frantically trying to shield himself behind fuel pumps as gunfire erupts. One shooter dressed head-to-toe in a black tracksuit, relentlessly gives chase. The second cloaked in a dark poncho and balaclava, closes in before delivering the fatal shots that brought the underworld figure down.
Panicked families and customers scattered into nearby shops as bullets cut through the busy street, the shooting described by detectives as a meticulously planned execution that showed total disregard for innocent lives.
Within minutes, the killers’ getaway car which is a stolen grey Porsche is found torched on a quiet Kensington street. Detectives believe the pair switched into a stolen white Audi hatchback and vanished into the night, leaving behind only a charred shell of evidence.
Police later revealed Acherkouk had recently learned there was a contract out for his life, just weeks before the attack that claimed him. His death marked the 27th gangland killing tied to Sydney’s drug wars since 2020.
The main suspect is Harley Johan, 31, a Sydney rapper better known by his stage name YC Ewzy. Detectives believe he fled to Malaysia soon after the murder, slipping away before officers could close in. His online presence only adds to the intrigue. His Instagram account boasts more than 6,000 followers, while his music video Reckless — which has racked up over 25,000 views — portrays a city consumed by violence, drugs and survival at any cost. The two-minute clip even opens with masked gunmen leaping from a car to assassinate a driver in an underground car park, imagery that now seems very close to real life.
Investigators under Strike Force continue their hunt, while police are also appealing for information to identify the second gunman still at large. Superintendent Andrew Garner summed up the scale of the violence, calling the Surry Hills shooting “an outrageous act that showed complete disregard for the safety of the public.”
Now with a global manhunt underway, the Homicide Squad wants Johan in custody it will be interesting to see whether the mounting evidence, combined with Sydney’s escalating gangland feud, eventually forces the fugitive rapper back into police hands.
