Woohoo, I bought the AJP PR7. And I'm in love. This vid ain't an AJP PR7 review, it's more of my first impressions and the moment I realised this was the right adventure bike! I wanted to try this motorbike since 2018 but the previous distributor never returned my messages. However the new national distributor seems to be very serious on establishing the brand in Australia. I finally had a test ride four weeks ago and loved it. All the PR7s in the first shipment were already sold but there was a cancellation. Andnow this AJP PR7 lives in my garage. I usually don't too excited about a new motorbike. Welcome to Cross Training Adventure, we are into all things dual sport and adventure on the east coast of Australia. But this one is different. The only other time I was this enthusiastic was when I bought a brand new Husaberg FE570 in 2012. I fell in love with it immediately. The same thing has happened with this AJP PR7. And I can pinpoint when I fell in love. I usually take it very easy on any new motorbike. But we rode up a local mountain range on my first ride and Terry started to give his WR450F some gas. I already knew from my first test ride that the PR7 feels incredibly stable on dirt roads. But I was running 25PSI in the AJP PR7 tyres and expected the AJP to be slipping and sliding all over the place. It reminded me of the FE570 all those years ago. Everything just felt right. The engine. The suspension. The handling. I already knew the inline stability of the PR7 was great for highway speeds on the dirt roads. But it feels nimble on slower tighter tracks like this. I suspect the centralised low positioning of the fuel tank under the seat is part of the reason. Check out our reviews of various adventure bikes and dual sport bikes.
The engine. All big fuel-injected four strokes are too snappy (especially at idle) and don't run well until you remap them due to emission laws. Not this motorbike. The PR7 actually feels like it has a carburetor. There's no snappiness from idle with the AJP PR7. There's no jerky response in the higher revs that can break traction for the rear wheel. And the engine pulls strongly from idle into a very meaty midrange. I still haven't revved the PR7 yet but there's so much grunt I doubt I'll ever need to rev it much. Then there's the suspension. Usually there is a lot of messing around with adjustment to get a reasonable compromise over several weeks. These Sachs forks and rear shock were perfect for my 90kg weight. I definitely overcooked the PR7 on one jump. I completely forgot there was a big drop after this jump. I was close to two metres off the ground and you can hear the bashplate hit hard. But the suspension just soaked it up. It was a big hit! Normally my Gopro never falls off the helmet! Riding back home we enjoyed some of the twisty roads through this mountain range. Again the PR7 handles really well. No twitchiness. Easy to throw around. Very smooth. This AJP PR7 felt surprisingly similar to the twin-cylinder adventure motorbikes I have ridden over the past few years like the Tenere 700 and KTM 890. Except this is 40kg to 50kg lighter. So yes, I'm in love. But as always I am keen to get to know the issues with the PR7 and do a critical review listing all the pros and cons. If you like dual sport riding in Australia then you might like our adventure riding vids. Ditto with the PR7. The very first models had a few issues but by 2022 AJP appeared to have resolved everything. Husaberg was a boutique brand that rapidly established a reputation for innovative design, reliability and motorbikes that simply worked great. The PR7 seems to be in the same category. Anyway it's very early days but it is so good to be so excited about a new motorbike again because it just seems to fit so well. I'll try to get a lot of riding in and get a comprehensive review on the way. And now I need to learn some Portuguese. Ate mais meus amigos. Keen on adventure riding in Australia? Check out our vids. This is one of our three channels, there's also a Cross Training Trials channel, and a Cross Training Enduro channel. All three are equally dodgy. We are the 27th most watched dirt channel in Uzbekistan. We reckon it's 80% the rider and 20% the bike. So the Cross Training Adventure focus is just get out there and have fun on two wheels. Instead of obsessing over the latest blinged out Beemer, which tyres to fit or spending a fortune on your suspension or billet alloy gas cap. Cross Training Adventure actively avoids sponsorship. We like doing seriously critical reviews. So subscribe. Or don't subscribe to our Cross Training Adventure riding channel. The main thing is get out and ride while you can with dual sport riding or Adventure riding in Australia, Canada, Vietnam, Romania and beyond! So check out Cross Training Adventure.
