Mike Tyson Knocks Out Larry Holmes, Heavyweight Boxing Title Bout, All Highlights & Knockdowns

Mike Tyson Faced Boxing Legend Larry Holmes on January 22, 1988 in a fight billed as " Heavyweight History" The age difference was huge with Tyson being 17 years younger than Holmes, though, Larry Holmes came into the fight in great shape, as well as being much taller and having a much longer reach not to mention Holme's ring savvy and ring experience having fought some of the greatest heavyweight boxers in history. Round one got off to a great start with Tyson going in fast trying to get under Holmes stiff, long jab. Tyson was doing most of the chasing, whilst Larry just threw out his jab then tied Mike up to block Mikes uppercuts. Round 2 started the same way, Tyson threw plenty of wild punches but could not connect cleanly, as Holmes simply blocked the heavy blows. Round 3 again started off with Tyson using the same game plan off getting in low and hoping to show off his peeka Boo style of boxing and maybe getting in close enough to land a knockout blow only Holmes kept laying all over Mike to stop Tyson getting any clean punches in. Towards the end of round 3 Mike did graze Holmes with some heavy punches that saw Holmes back into the ropes and cover up for dear life. Though, those punches didn't catch Holmes flush on the face so did not do much damage. Round for started off with a blast from the past, as Holmes started dancing around the ring, circling Tyson, whilst throwing out stiff, long jabs. The crowd roared with applause to see the old Larry Holmes on display. Remarkably, kind of got shown up, Tyson could not do anything except move his head from side to side making him look awkward and out skilled by the much older Holmes. The showmanship and slight arrogance of Holmes seemed to be sapping his energy, as Holmes looked tired from all the dancing around and he only succeeded in sending Tyson into a Rage. Within moments Tyson was all over Holmes hitting him with a barrage of massive punches that sent Larry crashing to the canvas. Holmes was off balance and dazed but was able to continue. Tyson came charging at Larry like an angry bull, swinging wildly as Holmes fell along the ropes. Again Tyson caught Holmes who bounces off the ropes then tumbled onto the canvas for the second time in the fight. The No - Knockdown rule was in place, so Larry was going to whatever he could to survive the final 20 seconds of the round. Tyson was not going to let Holmes off the hook that easily, and was on Larry again throwing huge punches in bunches from all angles. Holmes copped some massive hits to the head but remarkably kept on his feet by leaning on the ropes. Holmes was hurt bad and had no defence, and could only hold out loose arms hoping somehow to beat the clock. Tyson threw some huge lefts and rights that sent Holmes smashing hard onto the canvas. Holmes was laid out flat, as the medics and Holmes corner rushed to his aid. Holmes was out cold. As Holmes slowly lifted his head, Tyson and his corner celebrated this historic victory, as Iron Mike Tyson Cemented his name as the best boxer in the world by beating one of the greatest boxers in history, and thereby ushering in a new era in heavyweight boxing.
