Now, we know each cancer is different, and each cancer patient’s journey is different. Bringing all these cancer journeys together in terms of cancer treatment and support is very much needed. That’s why the theme is United by Unique. We support each other in this journey against cancer. As part of a cancer awareness initiative, we are talking about two cancers today. One is gastric cancer, and the other is oesophageal cancer, which are quite common in our country. Now let’s talk about the risk factors for gastric cancer. Long-term infection with bacteria called H. pylori could be one of the risk factors. Eating too much salty or smoked food is another risk factor. Low intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, smoking, and alcohol are significant risk factors. There is also a strong family history behind some people developing gastric cancer. Coming to oesophageal cancer, tobacco in any form—either smoking, gutka or paan—is a major risk factor. Excessive alcohol intake, long-standing acidity, reflux, difficulty in swallowing, obesity, and poor dietary factors together contribute to gastric and oesophageal cancer. Lifestyle plays a very big role in both these cancers. Patients affected by these cancers often face problems related to how they eat, how they digest, and how they live their daily lives. The sad part is that many people reach the doctor at a late stage. But if we understand the warning signs and act early, treatment is possible. Now, coming to the symptoms. For oesophageal cancer, symptoms include difficulty in swallowing food, especially solid food; a feeling like food is stuck in the throat; pain while swallowing solid food; or unexplained weight loss. Coming to gastric cancer, symptoms include persistent stomach pain or discomfort, indigestion or bloating that doesn’t go away, vomiting, sometimes vomiting of blood, black-colored stools due to small bleeding in the stomach, loss of appetite, weakness, and weight loss. If your near ones suffer from any of these symptoms, please consult your nearby doctor. Now, coming to diagnosis. To detect these cancers, doctors usually advise endoscopy, where a small camera is inserted to see the food pipe or the stomach. If anything suspicious is seen, a biopsy is done. CT scan and other tests may help to understand the stage of the cancer. The treatment options available depend on the stage, whether it is early or advanced. In the early stages, surgery is the main treatment modality. In advanced stages, chemotherapy, radiation, and a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy are required. Latest advances have been made in gastric and stomach cancer in the form of targeted therapy and immunotherapy, which have improved outcomes, especially in advanced and elderly cancer patients. The important point is to detect these cancers early based on symptoms, as the chances of cure are high when detected early. Now, what are the latest advances in the treatment of gastric and stomach cancer?
