Shiba reverse sneeze - she’s OK! If your dog suddenly “honks” or does rapid snorty inhales, it might be a reverse sneeze - common in Shiba Inu and many small/short-nosed breeds. What it is Reverse sneezing = brief spasm of the soft palate/throat that pulls air in vs. out in a normal sneeze. It looks dramatic but usually lasts only a few seconds. Why it happens • Irritants: dust, pollen, perfume, cleaning sprays • Excitement, pulling on the lead, gulping water/food • Temperature or humidity changes • (Less common) nasal mites, foreign body, dental/nasal issues What it sounds/looks like • “Goose honk” or snorting fit • Head and neck extended, elbows braced • Stops on its own; dog returns to normal What to do in the moment Stay calm. Gently stroke the throat/chest, encourage a swallow (a quick nose rub or offering water can help), and move away from irritants or outside for fresh air.
