In this famous account of Jesus calling His first disciples, Mark directs our focus to the central matter: Jesus' call to discipleship and what that call demands. The first disciples were lowly fishermen and unimpressive in the eyes of the world. God chose foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise. He uses weak men and women to do great things! God calls us and makes us fishers of men, catching sinners living in darkness, and winning precious souls to Jesus Christ! And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.
