International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026

In this interview, the FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean presents the Organization’s vision for the International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026, proclaimed by the United Nations to recognize and raise the visibility of women’s fundamental contributions to agrifood systems and to promote concrete action to address the persistent inequalities that limit their access to resources, opportunities, and decision-making. The International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026 is a global call to action to increase investment, strengthen the livelihoods of rural women, and promote their leadership across agrifood value chains. Empowered women are key agents in the transformation of agrifood systems. Closing gender gaps improves the well-being of women and their households, boosts productivity, strengthens resilience to climate change, and accelerates progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.
