India’s first hydrogen-powered train has been launched on the Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana, marking a major milestone in India’s transition towards clean and sustainable railway transportation. Designed, engineered and integrated in India, the train uses hydrogen fuel-cell technology to generate electricity and releases only water vapour during operation, resulting in zero operational carbon emissions.
The 10-coach hydrogen train has a passenger capacity of approximately 2,600 and a power capacity of 3,200 horsepower. It will operate at a speed of 75 kmph on the nearly 90-kilometre Jind–Sonipat route, while its maximum design speed is 110 kmph.
