Description

The Shadows were a British instrumental rock band, best known for their sleek guitar sound and influence on 1960s pop. Originally forming in the late 1950s as the backing band for Cliff Richard they helped shape the sound of early British rock 'n' roll together. Their first hit as Cliff Richard’s band was “Move It” (1958), widely regarded as one of the first authentic rock 'n' roll songs produced outside the U.S.. Over the years, Cliff Richard & The Shadows scored numerous hits including “Living Doll,” “Travellin’ Light,” “Please Don’t Tease,” and “The Young Ones.” Independently, The Shadows became stars in their own right with instrumental hits like “Apache” (1960), which reached No. 1 in the UK, and classics like “Wonderful Land,” “F.B.I.,” and “Kon-Tiki.” In 1979, they scored a surprise hit with their cover of “Theme from The Deer Hunter (Cavatina)”, originally composed by Stanley Myers and popularized by classical guitarist John Williams. Their version brought the haunting melody to a wider pop audience, reaching No. 9 on the UK Singles Chart. The piece featured prominently in Michael Cimino’s 1978 film “The Deer Hunter”, a powerful Vietnam War drama starring Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, and Meryl Streep. The film was a critical and commercial success, winning five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and grossing over $49 million worldwide.
