Description
As we close out 2025 I’m grateful to reflect on growing efforts to help shift perspectives from the old fictitious portrayal of sharks as mindless monsters, which led to so many sharks being hunted and killed and sparked fear to a point that most turned a blind eye to the cruelty and devastation of their populations, to one that shows their reality, importance, and vulnerability.
Out of sight is out of mind, so I am grateful to the many filmmakers and conservationists who have worked together to show the reality and importance of sharks, the ocean and their plight.
The film Jaws was the first “blockbuster,” captivating people with fear and filling the human imagination with a negative and inaccurate portrayal of sharks that led to a severely disproportionate and damaging level of apathy toward their treatment.
I hope there will be an increase in filmmakers and films that help people see what is going on beneath the beautiful surface of the ocean and show the human impacts. I know filming in the ocean comes with its own challenges and ours were nothing compared to filming the industrial fishing fleets hundreds of miles out in the open ocean like @seaspiracy did. The world needs and deserves to see what is going on offshore. Data 📉 is great and needed, but on its own it doesn’t translate to public action or educate consumer choices the way films, news and social media can. A diversity of approaches seems to be the most impactful.
If you have some time off this holiday season and are watching films with your family or friends I would highly recommend:
🎥Mission Blue @mission_blue
🎬Seaspiracy @seaspiracy
🎞️Envoy Cull @envoyfilm
🍿Racing Extinction @racingextinction
📽️Jane @janegoodallinst
🎦Ghost Fleet Film @vulcanproductions
All on @netflix @netflixfilm I think.
I am so happy the BBC has started to show human impacts in their films in recent years. Please also check out 🎥 A Life on Our Planet by @davidattenborough.
There are more but running out of caption & we truly need more films that keep sharks and marine life in the public’s mind. Make more or tag and mention more titles in comments ❤️& be happier by spending more time outside, not on 📺.
