The Bene Israel community, one of India’s oldest Jewish communities, settled along the Konkan coast and gradually became part of local Maharashtrian society while preserving its Jewish identity. Historical accounts suggest that members of this community served in regional armies and navies, including those associated with the Maratha Empire. Some traditions also link Bene Israel soldiers and sailors with the military forces of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
