Ducati's Tiny V4 Engine Makes Crazy Horsepower

Ducati’s tiny V4 engine is absolutely bonkers. While the car world was impressed by the record setting Honda S2000, which made 240 horsepower from a naturally aspirated two-liter, Ducati’s V4 is able to make nearly identical power, with HALF THE DISPLACEMENT! Yes, an adorable little 1-liter is cranking out well over 200 horsepower, not a turbocharger in sight. The secret to the engine’s success is how high it revs, while breathing freely. This is enabled not only by a short piston stroke, but also by desmodromic valves. Instead of using a traditional spring to close the valves, which can be unreliable at high RPM, known as valve float, Ducati’s solution adds an additional cam lobe & rocker, so the camshaft not only opens the valve now, but it closes it too, as it continues to rotate.
