Monday Minute: Peter Max's Statue of Liberty Paintings for President Reagan

In this Monday Minute in the Archives, we explore two colorful paintings by world-famous artist Peter Max—now on display at the Reagan Library as part of the America 250 exhibition. In July 1981, Peter Max joined the annual Fourth of July ceremonies at the request of President Reagan. For the occasion, he created six striking paintings of the Statue of Liberty. Years later, in 1992, he presented one of these works to the Reagan Foundation in honor of President and Mrs. Reagan. The second painting has an even more remarkable story. In 1986, Peter Max listened to President Reagan's address at the Statue of Liberty Centennial Celebration on July 3. He was so moved by the President's words that he dreamt President Reagan asked him to paint a colorful flag with a heart. The next morning, he woke up and brought that dream to life—then gifted the painting to the President. These pieces are part of the Reagan Library's America 250 exhibition, a special collection honoring 250 years of American history and the artists who captured its spirit.
