Description

The Cat D9G is one of Caterpillar’s most iconic track-type tractors, produced from 1961 to 1974 and remembered as one of the great old-school heavy dozers. It followed the earlier D9E and was later replaced by the D9H, which carried the D9 line forward with even more power. The D9G was a major step up from the D9E, with power increased from around 335hp to 385 flywheel horsepower. That extra muscle made it better suited to heavy pushing, ripping, scraper support, quarry work and large-scale earthmoving. Depending on blade, ripper and configuration, operating weight could vary, with figures often quoted from around 31 tonnes for the tractor itself to more than 87,000lb in working specification. What made the D9G so respected was its combination of brute force, mechanical simplicity and durability. Before electronics transformed modern dozers, machines like this relied on strong engineering, skilled operators and proper maintenance. In this video, we see a Cat D9G with 3 shank ripper working hard at Weiach Historik 2026 near Zurich, Switzerland.
