Description
Vijayawada is a city where bold flavours, comforting meals and vibrant street food culture come together beautifully. In the first episode of our three part Vijayawada food series, we explored the city with our young and enthusiastic local hosts Sai and Aditya, who introduced us to some of the region’s most iconic flavours and food stories.
We began the day at a large scale Ulavacharu making unit to witness the fascinating step by step process behind this beloved Andhra delicacy. Ulavacharu is a rich and earthy horse gram soup known for its deep flavour and comforting taste, and seeing it being prepared in huge quantities was an experience in itself.
Our next stop was the legendary SSS Idly, where we had some of the softest and fluffiest idlis in the city with ghee and different chutneys. From there we headed to Madras Filter Coffee for their unique Bellam Filter Coffee sweetened with jaggery.
For lunch, Aditya took us to Sri Ramaiah Mess where we experienced a wholesome Andhra style wedding meal served traditionally on banana leaves while learning more about the food traditions of the region.
Next at Hotel Jayadurga we sat down to a enjoy memorable spread featuring Chepala Pulusu, Royyalu Biryani, Ragi Sangati, Baghara Rice and Mutton Curry.
No Vijayawada food trail is complete without snacks, so we stopped for crispy Mirchi Bhajji and comforting Aalu Pakodi followed by refreshing lemon tea.
We also enjoyed a classic puri curry at Hotel Sai before ending the day at the buzzing Eat Street, a lively food stretch where families, students and food lovers gather every evening over snacks, desserts and comforting street food. We wrapped up the tour with a delicious falooda while soaking in the energetic atmosphere of the city.
From witnessing the making of Ulavacharu to exploring comforting Andhra meals, iconic tiffin spots and vibrant evening street food scenes, Vijayawada gave us a memorable introduction to its rich culinary culture.
This brought us to the end of Part 2. Stay tuned for Part 3.
