This boxy, steel-bodied vehicle was notable for its front-wheel-drive design and low profile, which provided stability and easy access for suited crews.In 1983, NASA transitioned to the Airstream Excella, famously dubbed the Astrovan. This silver, 28-foot motorhome became a symbol of the Space Shuttle program, carrying crews for nearly three decades until the final mission in 2011. Its interior was stripped of traditional RV amenities to accommodate eight astronauts in bulky flight suits.For the modern Artemis II mission, NASA selected a Sprinter-based Airstream, known as Astrovan II, developed specifically for Boeing’s Starliner crews.
