Description

A convoy of Challenger 2 battle tanks and armoured engineering vehicles are transported by road through Wales. Police stop traffic for the military vehicles as they make their way to Castlemartin Ranges in Pembrokeshire, after the Easter break. The Oshkosh 1070F 8x8 is the tractor unit of the Heavy Equipment Transporter (HET) tasked with pulling Challenger 2s and other heavy vehicles on the 28 wheeled King Trailers seen in the video. These are operated by 19 Tank Transporter Squadron of the Royal Logistics Corps (RLC) at Bulford Camp, and also FTX Logistics Ltd (KBR owned), who are contracted to the Ministry of Defence to provide transport during peacetime. The Challenger 2 is the Main Battle Tank (MBT) of the British Army and is operated by The King's Royal Hussars, The Queen's Royal Hussars & The Royal Tank Regiment at Tidworth Camp, Wiltshire. With the Challenger 2s was a Trojan Armoured Engineering Vehicle and a Terrier Armoured Digger. Both are used by the Royal Engineers to clear the battlefield of mines and obstructions, allowing tanks to proceed, and other engineering tasks. With the tanks is a Challenger Armoured Repair and Recovery Vehicle (CRARRV) of the Royal Electrical & Mechnical Engineers (REME) for recovery if needed. The 3.5 metre wide loads were escorted by Gwent Police through the entirety of South Wales. The police utilized Volvo V90, Cupra Leon traffic cars and BMW R1200 motorcycles working with Ford Transit and Vauxhall Movano escort vans with FTX Logistics. Soldiers followed in a hired van. The combined weight of each unit is over 100 tonnes and therefore is classed as an abnormal load; needing to avoid various weight restrictions on the M4 motorway and other unsuitable roads.
