Have you ever stopped to think about all the different surfaces on an airplane you touch, that may have germs on them, such as seats, arms rests, seat pockets, seat belts, overhead storage, air vents, lights, Infotainment system, toilet, door handles, door lock, taps, and the most common item used on a plane, the tray table. Airplane travel exposes passengers to various surfaces that are frequently touched, but infrequently cleaned, which creates a breeding ground for bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. Studies have found, that tray tables can be one of the dirtiest surfaces on an airplane, with higher concentrations of germs compared to other areas. Common bacteria found on airplane tray tables can vary, but studies have identified several types that are typically present on these surfaces. Some of the most commonly found bacteria include: Escherichia coli (E. coli) – This bacteria can originate from fecal contamination, potentially spread through improper handwashing or contact with contaminated surfaces. Staphylococcus aureus – A skin bacterium, S. aureus can cause infections, especially if it enters the body through cuts or abrasions. Enterobacter species – These are common bacteria found in the intestines and can be spread through contact with fecal matter or contaminated food. Bacillus species – These bacteria are commonly found in soil but can also be present on surfaces and food. While most Bacillus species are harmless, some can cause food poisoning. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) – While not always common, MRSA has been found in some studies on high-touch surfaces, and it’s particularly concerning because it is resistant to many antibiotics. Pseudomonas aeruginosa – Found in moist environments, this bacteria can cause infections, particularly in people with weakened immune systems. These bacteria are typically found due to infrequent cleaning of tray tables, combined with passengers eating, coughing, and touching these surfaces without sanitizing them.
