天心流兵法新宿支部の稽古より、まーこ先生による四方切（しほうぎり）。 四方を囲まれた想定の技法で、非常に激しい動きが特徴ですが、各動作にきわめて細かい想定と理合があり、直伝を受けない限り、似て非なるどころか、似てもいないものになります。 まあこれはすべての技法において共通しますが。 四方を囲まれて身動きままならぬという程の意味で、柵太刀（しがらみだち）とも呼びます。 From a training session at the Shinjuku Branch of Tenshinryu Hyoho: Shihō-giri 四方切り, performed by Māko Sensei. Shihō-giri 四方切り literally means “cutting in four directions.” Shihō 四方 means “the four directions,” and giri 切り comes from kiri 切り, meaning “to cut” or “cutting.” In Japanese compound words, the sound can become voiced, changing kiri to giri. This technique is based on the assumption that one is surrounded from all four directions. It is characterized by extremely intense movement, but every action contains highly detailed assumptions and principles. Unless one receives direct transmission, the result will not merely be “similar but different”; it will not even truly resemble the original. Of course, this applies to all techniques. Because the situation implies being so tightly surrounded that one can hardly move, this technique is also called Shigarami-dachi 柵太刀. Shigarami しがらみ means restraints, entanglements, or bonds that restrict movement. The kanji 柵 also means a fence or barrier. Therefore, the name Shigarami-dachi 柵太刀 conveys the image of a sword technique used when one is hemmed in by obstacles and constraints, with almost no freedom of movement. *What Is Tenshinryu?
