Description

One of my biggest pet peeves is when people talk about the “danger of creating super athletes” — as if that’s somehow a bad thing? The idea is that if you keep increasing your dog’s physical activity just to make them calm, they’ll keep adapting — meaning you’ll have to do more and more to reach the same level of calm. That’s where the supposed “danger” comes from. The idea that putting a ceiling on our dogs fitness and physical health because we “can’t keep up” is kind of ridiculous. Of course we can’t keep up - we’re humans, and working dogs are BRED for their insane physical capabilities. Being in peak physically condition isn’t something to avoid — it’s something to strive for. Regular, structured exercise supports muscle and joint health, heart function, and emotional well-being. Not to mention the mental benefits of moving their bodies. Yes, fulfilment isn’t just physical. Dogs need cognitive work, problem-solving, rest, and decompression too. But let’s be clear — there’s no danger in creating a strong, fit, capable dog. The danger lies in misunderstanding what fulfilment really means. The key is balance. Exercise shouldn’t be used to wear dogs out or suppress bad behaviour through exhaustion — it should be part of a lifestyle that includes many elements of fulfilment. When we consistently meet our dog’s needs are met across those levels, it so much easier to teach them how to relax (have an off switch). If we can give our dogs the opportunity to become healthier — to move more, explore more, and build strength — we should! So, go create that “super athlete” (I promise you it’s probably still only a fraction of what your dog is capable of). But remember that exercise alone won’t always make a happy and calm dog. #dogathlete #superathlete #dogexercise #athleticdog #runningdog
