Description
In 1939, French archaeologist Pierre Montet uncovered a royal necropolis at Tanis in the Nile Delta, revealing the tombs of long-forgotten pharaohs from Egypt’s 21st and 22nd dynasties. Hidden beneath the Temple of Amon, the site contained silver coffins, gold masks, sarcophagi and funerary treasures unlike anything previously found outside Tutankhamun’s tomb.
As Montet and his team explored the underground chambers, they identified rulers such as Osorkon II, Takelot I, Psusennes I and Chechonq II. Several tombs had been looted in antiquity, but others remained intact, preserving extraordinary royal burial objects and revealing a little-known period of Egyptian history.
The discoveries unfolded as Europe moved toward the Second World War, limiting the international impact of the finds despite their importance for Egyptology.
Through archive material, archaeological analysis and expert testimony, the film retraces the rediscovery of Tanis and the lost silver pharaohs of northern Egypt.
