Turning Human Hair Into a Real Diamond

Can human hair really be turned into a diamond? After the hair is cleaned and dried, the carbon inside it is extracted and converted into graphite in an oxygen-free, high-temperature environment. Inside a laboratory, this carbon is then exposed to extreme pressure of around 60,000 atmospheres and temperatures between 1,400°C and 2,500°C. Under these conditions, the carbon atoms rearrange into a real diamond crystal. The process may take weeks or even months, and the final diamond is not fake—it has the same chemical composition, hardness, and optical properties as a natural diamond.
