JNU के कुलपति पर कथित जातिवादी टिप्पणियों के विरोध में लेफ्ट छात्र संगठनों ने “समानता मार्च” निकाला था. इस मार्च में छात्रों ने वीसी के इस्तीफे की मांग की. लेफ्ट संगठनों का आरोप है कि इसी दौरान ABVP के कार्यकर्ताओं ने उनका रास्ता रोकने की कोशिश की, जिसके चलते तनाव बढ़ा और फिर बात हाथापाई तक पहुंच गई..
