Avakai Pickle Dal Rice
Ingredients
Toor Dal - 1/2 Cup
Water
Turmeric Powder - 1/2 Tsp
Ghee
Mustard Seeds - 1 Tsp
Cumin Seeds - 1 Tsp
Red Chilli - 2 Nos
Asafoetida - 1/2 Tsp
Curry Leaves
Garlic
Onion - 1 No. Chopped
Salt - 1/2 Tsp
Avakai Pickle - 2 Tbsp
Cooked Rice
Method
Wash and soak ½ cup toor dal for 30 minutes.
Pressure cook it with enough water, ½ tsp turmeric, 5 chopped garlic cloves, and ½ tsp ghee for 4 whistles on medium flame.
Allow the pressure to release naturally, then mash the dal until smooth and creamy. Keep it aside.
Heat a wide kadai and add 4 tbsp ghee.
Once hot, add 1 tsp mustard seeds and 1 tsp cumin seeds.
When they splutter, add 2 broken dry red chillies, ½ tsp asafoetida, and a handful of curry leaves.
Sauté briefly. Add 5 chopped garlic cloves and 1 finely chopped small onion, and sauté until soft.
Lower the flame and add the mashed dal.
Mix well and add ½ tsp salt. Now add 2 tbsp spicy avakai pickle and mix until well combined.
Finally, add ½ cup cooked rice and gently mix everything together. Drizzle ghee on top and serve hot with papad or potato fry.
