I Found the Monk Who Mummified Himself Alive

These monks mummified themselves alive. In the mountains of northern Japan, I went searching for them and discovered 'Sokushinbutsu' or "The Living Buddhas" Sokushinbutsu is an ancient practice where Buddhist monks attempted to preserve their bodies through years of extreme asceticism, fasting, and ritual… before being buried alive in meditation. In this video, I travel into northern Japan to investigate the monks who attempted this process, visit the temples where they are still preserved, and try to understand why someone would take devotion this far.
