Inside a Shepherd Village in Northern Pakistan 🇵🇰 | Baltistan Mountains

In the third episode of my Northern Pakistan series, I travel deep into Khaplu and up into the mountains to a remote area known as Khaplu Broq. This high-altitude region of Baltistan is home to traditional Balti yak shepherds, farmers, and families who spend their summers here during the harvesting season. We visited several yak shepherds who welcomed us into their homes, prepared tea, and showed how these mountain houses are built — from stone foundations to the small rooms made for their animals. The people here farm potatoes, wheat, and buckwheat, and gather wild sea buckthorn, a plant known in Pakistan for its health benefits and bright orange berries. As we spent time together, they shared details about their daily life in the mountains — how they farm and take care of their animals in this harsh landscape, and what it’s like to live in Khaplu Broq during the short harvest season. We also danced and sang together, giving me a rare glimpse into their warm and humble community. These families only stay here in the warmer months because the winters in this part of Northern Pakistan are extremely harsh. The area has almost no infrastructure — just one makeshift “store,” a tent laid over rocks that locals use for basic supplies. This journey gave me an inside look at rural Pakistan, traditional Balti culture, and the unique connection between the people here and their yaks, which are special to this region of Pakistan.
