The Bell Hotel in Epping has been emptied after months of anger and legal wrangling, following outrage over an asylum seeker sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl and a woman. The hotel became a national flashpoint, with protests, court battles and accusations that ministers were ignoring local people while packing migrants into communities already under strain. Officials say the site was cleared because of fire safety concerns, but the move will be seen by many as a humiliating retreat after the Government lost control of the situation.
