Description

Before Jesus heals the paralytic’s body, He heals his soul. Father Chris Alar, MIC, draws our attention to what the Gospel makes unmistakably clear: The greatest paralysis is not physical — it is sin. The man comes seeking bodily healing, but Christ immediately addresses a deeper wound. Sin paralyzes the human person interiorly. It binds the will, darkens the intellect, and separates us from God, who alone is the source of life. This is why Jesus teaches by His actions that spiritual healing is more urgent than physical healing. A restored body without a restored soul would leave the most serious problem untouched. The scribes object, asking the right question for the wrong reason: “Who can forgive sins but God alone?” (Mk 2:7; NABRE). They fail to recognize who stands before them. Jesus reveals His divine authority, not only by reading their hearts, but by forgiving sins, and then confirming that authority through visible healing. What only God can do, Christ does, because He is God in the flesh. This moment points directly to the Sacraments. Christ continues His work of forgiving sins and restoring souls through the Church, where mercy is not merely symbolic, but effective. The Catechism teaches that forgiveness of sins restores communion with God and brings true interior freedom (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1446). Physical healing may ease suffering, but forgiveness restores life itself. Father Chris reminds us that Christ’s mercy always goes to the root. The Lord does not merely improve our condition — He saves us. And when He forgives, He invites us to rise, no longer defined by what once held us down, but renewed by grace and sent forth in freedom.
