Why would Allah create someone He already knows will end up in hellfire?
In Season 4, Episode 5 of Quran Conversations, Dalia Mogahed addresses one of the most asked and most difficult questions in Islamic theology with clarity and depth.
The answer begins with free will. Allah gave human beings genuine agency, the real ability to choose. Not a performance of choice where the outcome was always predetermined, but actual freedom to believe or disbelieve, to do good or to reject truth entirely. That gift is extraordinary. But a gift of real freedom cannot exist without real consequences. Freedom without accountability is not freedom at all. It is just the illusion of it.
Some people will use that free will to choose evil. Some will reject the truth even after it reaches them clearly. And because the choice is genuine, the consequence has to be genuine too. That is not cruelty. That is the logical completion of the gift itself.
Dalia's framing is important because it recenters the question. The issue is not why Allah created people who would make destructive choices. The issue is that a world with true free will must include the full weight of what that freedom allows. And Allah, in His wisdom, considered that worth giving us anyway.
Agency is one of the most dignifying things Allah extended to human beings. The question is what we do with it.
