Schools are banning fidget toys (why that’s a problem)

Everyone’s trying to get their hands on fidget toys these days. But it’s getting harder for the people who rely on fidgets to access them. And not just because they’re selling out. We’re already hearing from parents that schools are cracking down on fidgets — banning them unless they’re written into a 504 or an IEP. This risks turning fidgets back into something that’s stigmatized and scrutinized, instead of normalized and accepted. And while research might not show a clear clinical benefit for fidgets, these sensory tools are still important for many neurodivergent people.
