Description
Becoming an orthopedic surgeon changes the way you live. Here are 5 things I stopped doing the moment I understood what they actually do to your body.
1. Sitting for hours without moving.
Prolonged static sitting compresses the lumbar discs, tightens the hip flexors, and shuts off the glutes entirely. I set a timer. Every hour I'm up and moving. The spine was not designed to be loaded in one position for six hours straight.
2. Skipping warmups.
I used to go straight into activity cold. Now I know exactly what a cold muscle tear looks like on an MRI. Five minutes of warmup is not optional — it's the difference between tissue that's pliable and tissue that's one wrong movement away from a problem.
3. Ignoring joint pain.
I used to push through discomfort like everyone else. Now I know what happens when small problems go untreated. Inflammation compounds. Cartilage wears. What was manageable at month one becomes structural damage by month six.
4. Sleeping without supporting my spine.
The position you sleep in for seven to eight hours matters enormously. I stopped sleeping on my stomach entirely — it forces cervical rotation and compresses lumbar facet joints for hours at a time. pillow between the knees. Every night.
5. Skipping resistance training.
Once I understood sarcopenia — the age related muscle loss that begins in your 30s — I stopped treating strength training as optional. Muscle mass is the single most important physical asset you can protect as you age. The patients who train consistently recover faster, function better, and need me less. That's the goal. 🩺💪
