Ukraine is increasingly using American V-BAT reconnaissance drones to search for Russian military targets and conduct strikes deep into Russian territory. These drones help identify air defense systems, military equipment, and infrastructure, and are adapting to Russian electronic warfare systems thanks to constant data exchange between the Ukrainian military and American developers, CBS reports. One telling incident occurred in early March in the Black Sea. An American V-BAT reconnaissance drone, while conducting surveillance, spotted Russian troops and equipment on a gas production platform near the southern coast of Ukraine. After receiving the coordinates, the Ukrainian Navy deployed naval drones, which attacked the facility. During the battle, a Russian Ka-27 helicopter arrived to evacuate personnel and equipment, but a Ukrainian attack drone crashed into it and destroyed it. Ukrainian military estimates indicate that Russia lost equipment worth over $1.5 million, and the platform itself, which the occupiers had used to attack Ukrainian regions, was destroyed. This operation was one of the first examples of a new Ukrainian strategy involving strikes on high-cost and strategically important targets. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also announced a 40-day "influence operation" aimed at increasing pressure on Russia to end the war. As a Ukrainian drone fleet operator with the call sign "Negative" explained, the V-BAT's main advantage is its long range: "We focus on targets that are high-value, strategically valuable, or difficult to replace." According to him, the drone can conduct surveillance over a long distance, collect detailed images and transmit intelligence data without approaching the area where Russian air defense systems operate. Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov reported that in June, Ukraine nearly doubled the number of strikes on targets located more than 50 kilometers from the front line. The campaign in the Black Sea remains particularly effective. In particular, Ukrainian forces recently attacked nine oil tankers, which they believed were part of Russia's "shadow fleet." Furthermore, last month, occupation authorities were forced to temporarily suspend gas sales to civilians in Crimea. Fedorov stated that Ukrainian drones should gradually isolate the occupied peninsula from mainland Russia. Just a year ago, such a strategy seemed unlikely. In March 2025, the US stopped sharing some intelligence with Ukraine for strikes on Russian territory, after which Kyiv began to cooperate more actively with its European partners. French President Emmanuel Macron previously stated that approximately two-thirds of the intelligence data Ukraine receives comes from France. Taras Chmut, founder of the "Come Back Alive" foundation, explained that after the decline in American support, Ukraine has increasingly engaged European countries: "They may be a little more limited technologically, but they make decisions faster than the Americans." At the same time, Ukrainian manufacturers are also enhancing the capabilities of their own reconnaissance drones by equipping them with Starlink terminals. However, the military notes that the V-BAT is currently unrivaled in terms of range, operational life, and communication quality. According to experts, the drone not only helps locate targets but also pinpoint the location of Russian air defense systems, particularly the S-400. Furthermore, the aircraft uses artificial intelligence software that automatically plots flight routes based on known Russian air defense positions. Shield AI notes that combat use in Ukraine has become an important source of information for improving the system. Although, according to Reuters, V-BAT drones have crashed more than 50 times during flights in various countries over the past 18 months, the Ukrainian experience allows for rapid mitigation of any shortcomings. "For example, if Russian electronic warfare systems begin operating on a certain frequency, our operators report this information. When these frequencies change, we receive new reports and make adjustments," said Alex, a Ukrainian veteran and Shield AI field operator. Ukrainian military officials note that close cooperation with American companies helps them refine technologies in real combat conditions, and the knowledge gained increases the effectiveness of both the drones themselves and their use on the front lines.
