"Uttar Pradesh recently witnessed a violent thundersquall (severe thunderstorm) that swept across multiple districts, killing many people, uprooting trees, collapsing walls, and causing widespread damage. These powerful storms — locally known as ‘Andhi’ — are part of the pre‑monsoon weather pattern in North India.
So why did this deadly storm occur?
During the pre‑monsoon season (April–May), intense surface heating causes the air near the ground to become very warm. At the same time, moisture‑laden winds from the Bay of Bengal reach the northern plains, providing fuel for storm formation.
When this warm, moist air rises rapidly into the cooler upper atmosphere, it creates instability — a key condition for thunderstorms and squalls. Simultaneously, winds from upper‑level weather systems like Western Disturbances (cool, dry winds from the west) meet the warm moist air, enhancing atmospheric instability and triggering the development of cumulonimbus clouds.
Inside these towering clouds, strong updrafts and downdrafts form, leading to lightning, thunder, heavy rain, and severe wind gusts — the hallmark features of a thundersquall.
Understanding such extreme weather events is crucial for aspirants, as climate, environment, and disaster management are important parts of the UPPCS General Studies syllabus."
