When we found him, it was clear he had been in pain for quite some time. His body was covered in raw, infected wounds, and every movement must have been agonizing. We may never know exactly what happened to him. He may have been attacked by another animal or suffered some other traumatic injury, but regardless of how he got there, our priority was getting him the lifesaving care he so urgently needed. At the emergency hospital, Neymar was sedated so veterinarians could safely clean his wounds, perform a thorough examination, and run extensive diagnostic testing. The results were devastating. Neymar tested positive for Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV), a disease that weakens the immune system and leaves cats far more vulnerable to infection, and sporotrichosis, a serious fungal infection that causes painful skin ulcers and can spread to both animals and humans. On top of that, he was severely dehydrated, anemic, and battling a significant infection caused by the extent of his untreated wounds. Together, these diagnoses have made his recovery far more complicated and far more fragile. Because sporotrichosis is contagious, Neymar must remain in strict medical isolation while receiving intensive treatment. His days are filled with specialized medications, frequent wound care, laboratory monitoring, nutritional support, and constant veterinary supervision. Recently, another challenge has emerged: Neymar has become increasingly reluctant to eat. Proper nutrition is critical for wound healing and immune function, especially in a cat living with FeLV. If he continues refusing food, veterinarians may need to place an esophageal feeding tube to ensure he receives the nourishment his body desperately needs to survive. Complex medical cases like Neymar's quickly overwhelm our resources.
