Description
In mid-June 2026, we rode behind DC 4818 from Hamilton to Taumarunui and back. This excursion started on the Glenbrook Vintage Railway and was run in conjunction with the popular Fieldays event at Mystery Creek, but passengers also had the option to go all the way to Taumarunui.
In addition to DC 4818's excursion, this video also features some rare diesel locomotives stored in the yard in Taumarunui (not to mention DFB 7023, the Northern Explorer and double-headed EF electric locomotives). Incidentally, this was the first time I had ridden on any part of the central Main Trunk line since January 2023, when I was last on the Northern Explorer.
The Hamilton to Taumarunui section may not be as scenic as the Central Plateau, but it's still quite a picturesque part of New Zealand in its own right. We got lucky with the weather, as it was nice and sunny all day.
