The Western Wall, also known as the Kotel, is the most sacred site in the world accessible to the Jewish people. It is a remnant of the Second Temple, the great sanctuary that once stood in Jerusalem until its destruction by the Romans in the year 70 CE. For nearly two thousand years, the Wall has been a place of prayer, longing, and tears. It is not simply an ancient structure of stone; it is the last visible reminder of the Temple Mount, where the Jewish people believe the Divine Presence rests forever. Standing before the Wall is standing at the very heart of Jewish memory, identity, and faith.
On the days leading up to Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, the plaza before the Western Wall fills with thousands of worshippers. Men and women gather in prayer, asking for forgiveness, reciting the ancient words of the Selichot, and pouring out their hearts before God. Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement, a day dedicated entirely to repentance, fasting, and returning to the Creator. At this sacred time, the atmosphere at the Western Wall becomes even more intense, filled with cries of devotion, whispers of hope, and a sense of awe that transcends words.
Just before Yom Kippur, I had the privilege of visiting the Western Wall. Amid the gathering crowds, I carried with me two folded notes written by Christian women. They had entrusted me with their prayers, asking me to place them in the Wall on their behalf. Their faith, though different from my own, was joined in the act of seeking God at this most holy site. When I placed their notes into the cracks of the Wall, they ceased to be mere papers. The moment they touched the ancient stones of the Temple, they were transformed into sacred prayers, united with countless others whispered and written here throughout the centuries.
The destiny of these notes is also meaningful. Because they are sacred, they can never simply be thrown away or discarded. Twice a year, the notes are carefully removed from the Wall by the rabbis responsible for its care. With great respect, they are collected and carried to the Mount of Olives, to a special genizah, a burial place for holy writings. There, in the earth of the ancient cemetery overlooking the Temple Mount, the notes rest for eternity, never destroyed, never forgotten. They remain part of the sacred history of Jerusalem.
This experience at the Western Wall, just before Yom Kippur, is a reminder that prayer transcends borders, religions, and languages. The stones of the Wall have absorbed the cries of countless generations, and they continue to welcome every soul who comes with sincerity. For the two women whose prayers I placed there, their words now belong to the sacred story of Jerusalem. Their notes became holy the instant they touched the Wall of the Temple, and they will find their final resting place in the genizah on the Mount of Olives.
At the Western Wall, one realizes that every voice, every tear, every prayer has a place before God.
