A month after these two sides met earlier in this edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), plenty has changed and their fortunes now head in contrasting directions. One team is eyeing the top spot on the points table, while the other is battling to keep its playoff hopes alive. Gujarat Titans, currently second on the table, take on Kolkata Knight Riders, who sit eighth, at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday (May 16).
If GT win both their remaining games, they will secure a top-two finish. KKR, on the other hand, need a victory to stay in contention and will also hope other results fall in their favour.
GT are on a five-match winning streak and look almost unbeatable at the moment. But as the last few days have shown, any team can beat anyone in the IPL on a given day. Not too long ago, KKR themselves were on a four-match winning run before it came to an end against the defending champions RCB.
In their last game, GT took on SRH and got the better of the Orange Army thanks to a superb bowling performance. Batting first, they posted 168/5 in 20 overs. Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar struck half-centuries, while Nishant Sindhu (22 off 14) and Jason Holder (11 off 10) were the only other batters to reach double figures on a tricky surface in Ahmedabad.
With the ball, Kagiso Rabada and Jason Holder picked up three wickets each, while Prasidh Krishna bagged two. Mohammed Siraj and Rashid Khan chipped in with a wicket apiece as GT bundled SRH out for just 86.
On the other hand, KKR piled on close to 200 after batting first against RCB in their previous outing. Angkrish Raghuvanshi top-scored with 71 off 46, while Rinku Singh played a fine cameo, remaining unbeaten on 49 off just 29 balls. Cam Green also made a useful contribution with 32 off 24.
In reply, Kartik Tyagi’s three-wicket haul kept KKR in the contest, but with little support from the other pacers, RCB chased down the target with five balls to spare. KKR dearly missed Varun Chakaravarthy in that game, especially through the middle overs where his ability to choke the scoring was absent.
